5/16/2018 0 Comments Our DATAOur final products are succulents. We gave away succulents at Vicente Foods, a popular market in Brentwood, to people to spread the word about water waste in gardens. Succulents use way less water than a typical plant. Although these succulents were free and you could just walk by and take one, we asked one thing in return; to answer a 3 question survey. We got very good feedback from our customers. Our first question was: Did you learn anything new from the pamphlet? 88.8% of our customers answered yes to the first question, and the only person that answered no was a person who worked in this kind of area. The second question was: Would you use any of the tips? 100% of the people answered yes to this question. Our last question was: Would you consider planting more drought tolerant plants? 88.8% of people answered yes to this question and the only person that answered no said she doesn’t plant anything.

This week we have been thinking about where we should advertise for saving water. We found out that to go to the farmers market we would need a permit and we don't have enough time to get one. So we decided that we are going to advertise at Vicente Foods. We also ran into a problem, that we couldn't sell the cacti because nobody would buy them. The reason is because you can go anywhere and get them for a dollar. So we decided that we would give them away with a pamphlet. The pamphlet would say how to take care of the succulents, and it will also have the names of a the companies that sponsored us. Then after reading the pamphlet, we will hand the “customers” a survey to fill out, that our group has made asking; “Did you learn anything new from the pamphlet? Will you use any of the water saving tips from the pamphlet? Would you consider planting more drought tolerant plants?” All around this week has been very productive because we got a lot done. Later in the week on Thursday we have to back to Vicente Foods to film our video. We will be going on May tenth at 4pm. Yet again we will be giving away cacti to people leaving Vicente Foods. The only difference that will be made is that there will be limited supply. Posted by Ben 4/27/2018 0 Comments Our new solutionAt the beginning the faculty interviews our group didn’t have a solution. We had to tell the faculty that we had an a somewhat broad topic, which is water waste in gardens, and we had parts of an idea but didn’t have a solution. When we were interviewing the first person she gave us an idea. She said that we had good ideas and helped us bring our ideas together into one solution. We think that the interviews were really helpful and everyone gave us a ton of feedback which was very helpful since we didn’t really have a solution in the beginning. Our solution is way better after receiving feedback and critiques. Since Aerin and Carly live near each other in Brentwood the community they are solely working with is Brentwood. As for Ben and Will, which both live in the Palisades so they will be working in the Palisades. We are splitting up for the first selling to hopefully sell more. So we have finally came up with a solid solution, that involves many steps. The first step is to buy some succulent plants based on the money we will receive from sponsors. We will and already are contacting many landscaping companies and pitching our solutions to them. If they accept, they will give us the money to buy the plants. Once bought, we split up. Aerin and Carly hitting the farmer’s market in Brentwood, while Ben and Will work at the one in the Palisades. These succulent plants are not normal ones. We will provide the name and contact information of the landscaping company on the pot of the the plant. We will also attach a handout that explains how and when to water it, and what to do with the plant. Hopefully, our customers will call the company who’s name will be inscribed on the pot. They will then come over to our customer’s house and talk to them about what they need to do to improve a drought sufficient garden. Also, once customers have purchased this plant pack they will take a picture of it, post it to Instagram with the hashtag “#waterwise2018”. posted by Will 4/27/2018 0 Comments Our Old solutionWe have finalized our problem. Our problem is water waste in gardens. We believe that there is to much water being wasted in gardens. ½ inch of a sprinkler that is broken can waste 16 gallons per minute. This is a huge problem affecting our country especially California. Are groups progress over the last few weeks has been large. We were able to do so much research and get inspiration on an idea. Although we don’t have an idea we were very productive. What we are thinking of doing is a cacti for cati type of idea. What we were going to do was send cacti to people and have them plant them in their backyard. Also,we were going to create an app that told you when your plants were watered and when you tried to re water it it would not let you. posted by Carly 4/27/2018 0 Comments The next step forwardOur group has made tons of progress. Our main topic was water waste, but we have narrowed it down to water waste in gardens. We learned that 50% of water we use outdoors is wasted from inefficient watering methods and systems. For example if you had a 8 foot by 8 foot garden you are already using 5 gallons of water to water this garden. Also the bigger the property the more water is used. Our group has reached out to Debby Figoni, the head of water conservation in Beverly Hills. She told us many things associated with the topic of water being wasted in gardens. We are also trying to contact Wendy Coleman, the Founder of Tower Garden. We should be concerned about the amount we use in our gardens because California is known for being in drought. We also realize the demand for water can often exceed the annual amount of rainfall. Posted by Aerin 4/27/2018 0 Comments The BeginningHi, our names are Ben, Aerin, Will, and Carly. We attend Windward school and we believe that water is wasted way to often in the U.S. We want to help stop water from being wasted in the outdoors of people’s houses. We chose to do water waste because water is overused on a daily basis to water a lawn, or taking extended showers. We learned that the average person wastes so much water that makes us understand why we are in a drought. Also being in a drought for most of our lives, shows that even if people try to fix things they can’t always do because they are not committed or just don’t care. We believe that while we are in the middle of a drought, we should have ways to reduce, conserve, and reuse water in the U.S. Posted By Aerin |
